Lewes New School (UK)

ghfp   The Lewes New School aims to develop whole individuals, who can grow up to be valued and effective members of their communities. It looks to discover what is unique about every child, and to support that uniqueness by creating a range of teaching and learning opportunities that naturally accommodate different styles of learning.
  respect and honesty
lewes new school class scene   Lewes New School, located in the county town of Lewes, in East Sussex, England, has gone through more than ten years' journey in establishing a learning community in which the children's interests and needs are respected, their innate curiosity and love for learning is encouraged and where human relationships are the key to education.

The basis of the school's work is the idea that children are developing human beings in their own right and deserve to be communicated with in a mutually respectful and emotionally honest way.

Set up by a group of local parents in 2001, the school aims to nurture children's intellectual, emotional and spiritual development within a safe and supportive learning environment. Over time, it has explored and gradually developed truly innovative approach to curriculum which is open-ended and inquiry-based where the child plays an active part in creating ideas and identifying topics for project work.

  New School Thinking Conference

Lewes New School convenes and hosts an annual 'New School Thinking' Conference. The latest conference took place in October 2009 and was focused on exploring an open approach to curriculum formation.

To help promote their 2009 conference, Lewes New School recorded a great version of 'Changes' by David Bowie. Pupils from the school play all the instruments and sing, except for the bass, which is played by Herbie Flowers, the bassist on the original version. The track is now accessible on YouTube.

Please refer to the conference ning network for more information.

The GHFP is a patron of the Lewes New School. Our Vice Chairman, Sharif Horthy, is one of the school's trustees, and our Research Fellows are also providing onging input to the school's ethos and teaching and learning practice. Over time, the GHFP has supported its educational innovation, including the development of a respectful communication model. This model is proving to be effective in creating a community where all members are respected as individuals, and which fosters in each child a strong sense of self and awareness of others. As such, the school is regarded as an extension of home by the children and parents.

The GHFP is also sponsoring Lewes New School's curriculum development. With the encouragement from educationalists and consultants, the school is experimenting an open approach to curriculum which respects and centres on the children's interests and innate drive for learning.

This initiative reflects the value of 'less is more' in teachers' instruction. Instead of transmitting pre-determined set of knowledge and information, teachers will be facilitators, listeners, observers and learners as they provide support to children's learning.

This open approach to curriculum is inspired by the Reggio Emilia among other modes of progressive educational thinking.
